“In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce,” the unsigned email stated, as per the New York Times and The Washington Post. “We recognize that this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter, but this action is, unfortunately, necessary to ensure the company’s success moving forward.”

Twitter Employees Will Be Learning Of Their Employment Status on Friday

All employees of Twitter will be learning of their employment status at the company by 9. am. PT Friday via an email with the subject line “Your Role at Twitter,” the notice said. Twitter at the moment roughly has 7,500 workers, but it however was immediately clear as to just how many employees would be affected by the layoffs.

Musk originally planned to cut about 3,700 jobs at Twitter or close to half of its workforce, Bloomberg on Wednesday reported. The outlet on Friday reported a lawsuit seeking class-action status filed on Thursday, accusing social network Twitter of violating the federal worker adjustment and retraining notification (WARN) act, which requires big companies to give at least 60 days of advance notice bore mass layoffs.

Musk Just Completed A Deal to Purchase Twitter for $44 Billion

This very move is coming just after musk completed a deal to purchase Twitter for $44 billion and ten fired several of its executives. Mush who is an avid user of Twitter has stated that the company has plenty of potentials that he reportedly plans to unlock. He however has also been one of the toughest critics of Twitter accusing the social media company of “failing to adhere to free speech principles” and also misleading him about the number of spam or fake accounts on the social media platform.

Musk did try to back out of the deal, but the social networking company sued him to go through with the agreement.

Time reported back in October that workers of twitter wrote a letter to the board of directors of the company, musk, and staff noting that the cut of staff “will hurt Twitter’s ability to serve the public conversation.” The company reportedly has 238 million daily users on the platform that can see ads.

“A threat of this magnitude is reckless, undermines our users’ and customers’ trust in our platform, and is a transparent act of worker intimidation,” the unnamed workers in the letter said. And at the time, the Post reported that Elon Musk planned to cut off 75% of the workforce f twitter but the tech billionaire in a meeting with employees denied this.

Musk Has Suggested Many Changes Since He Took Over Twitter

And ever since he took over Twitter, musk has suggested many changes he wants to make in the platform such as creating a content moderation panel and council. Other ideas he has involved ways to generate revenue outside of advertising. And this includes the users of the platform having to pay $8 monthly for a subscription plan where they would get a verified blue check mark and many other features. He has also signaled that he wants to revive vine which is a short video app that Twitter back in 2017 shut down.
