It is for a journalist or a group of journalists who write a news article or a series of articles in any medium, except books, in a week or less.

Every year, a reporter or a team of reporters who write a news article or a series of articles in any format, except books, that explain the Earth and space sciences clearly and engagingly to the public, receive the award.

The Perlman Award, which started in 2000, honors the distinguished ex-editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, David Perlman.

Eligibility Requirement

The nominee(s) must meet the following Eligibility below in order to qualify for this program:

  • You must work as a journalist in any medium, except books.
  • You should be an author or contributor of the submitted report.
  • You can either be a freelance journalist or employed with a print or electronic publication or broadcast or cable station or network.
  • Each individual is allowed to submit only one entry for the award in a given year.
  • You are ineligible for the Perlman Award if you have been a recipient within the last two years.

In addition

  • Group up to four authors or contributors can be included in a single nomination.
  • Self-nominations are accepted.
  • Nominees are not required to be members of the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

Selection Criteria

  • News stories or series that:
  • Bring new information or ideas related to AGU sciences to the public.
  • Correct and identify misconceptions about AGU sciences, or make them easily comprehendible and engaging to the general public while maintaining accuracy.
  • Accuracy, initiative, and transparency in reporting.
  • The timeliness of the story’s publication, predating other media outlets.
  • Whether the story features exceptionally original, significant, surprising, or confidential information.

Furthermore, the news story or series must:

  • Focus on one or more of the scientific disciplines that AGU represents
  • Have been created for and accessible to the general public
  • Be in English or have an English ttranslation.

A series can be considered as a single entry if:

  • Each part of the series was labeled as being a part of the series when it was published, or
  • The series covers ongoing events, such as a scientific society meeting or a natural occurrence.
  • It’s important to note that no more than three segments of any series can be entered for judging.

  • If a person has been nominated for multiple works for the same award, the AGU staff will reach out to the nominee to inquire about their preference for which work to advance for consideration. Each individual is only allowed to submit one work for consideration for an award.
