Blue Label Telecoms has received approval from the Competition Commission to acquire control of South African mobile operator Cell C.
The acquisition, facilitated through Blue Label’s subsidiary The Prepaid Company (TPC), marks a significant step in the consolidation of the telecommunications sector.
Blue Label Telecoms Granted Approval to Acquire Control of Cell C
Previously holding less than 50% of Cell C, Blue Label now seeks to increase its stake to 53.5%.
The approval from the Competition Commission comes with conditions aimed at mitigating information exchange concerns and ensuring the continued use of certain prepaid airtime distribution channels post-merger.
Additionally, Blue Label has filed an application with the communications regulator Icasa to transfer Cell C’s spectrum licenses to TPC. This move aligns with Blue Label’s strategy to strengthen its position in the mobile services market.
Cell C, while undergoing changes in ownership, reassures customers that it will retain full control of its spectrum and continue operating as a mobile network operator.
Supporting Cell C’s Evolution
Blue Label’s interest in bringing in a new strategic investor reflects its vision for Cell C’s future growth and development.
This strategic partner, anticipated within the next two to three years, is expected to contribute value-added expertise in strategy, potentially from sectors such as banking, retail, or telecommunications.
The approval of the acquisition underscores Blue Label’s commitment to enhancing its presence in the telecommunications industry and supporting Cell C’s evolution as a competitive player in the market.
