The Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is an energetic and lively event that honors and rejoices in mountain-themed literature, films, and photography. It serves as a gathering place for filmmakers, writers, publishers, editors, photographers, athletes, adventurers, and enthusiasts of mountain-related content.
Through film screenings, inspiring guest speakers, engaging seminars, and book signings, the festival provides a diverse range of experiences for those who love mountain films and books. One of the festival’s notable programs is the internationally acclaimed Book Competition, which honors and embraces mountain literature in various genres.
Competition Categories
The categories for which prizes will be awarded at the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival are as follows:
- Adventure Travel: Non-fiction books exploring travel to remote and rugged landscapes and their cultures. English editions are eligible for this category.
- Mountain Fiction & Poetry: Fiction and poetry books with a focus on mountain topics, including climbing, exploration, and mountain culture.
- Guidebook: Non-fiction books providing information on physical activities in mountain environments, such as hiking, climbing, and mountaineering.
- Mountain Image: Books primarily feature mountain images, with text playing a supporting role. This can include photographs or artwork reproductions.
- Mountain Article: Articles or essays under 7,000 words with mountain themes, including climbing, adventure, conservation, and mountain literature. Fiction, historical, or non-fiction narratives are accepted.
- Environmental Literature: Books related to the environment, specifically covering topics like flora, wildlife, conservation, and climate change. This category does not include scholastic research or academic papers/texts.
- Mountain Literature: Non-fiction books, including memoirs, biographies, and narratives on mountaineering, climbing history, mountain exploration, and mountain culture.
- Climbing Literature: Any longlisted book with a theme of climbing is eligible for this award.
- Grand Prize: Awarded to a book selected from the winners in the above categories.
Benefit
- Every year, an international panel of writers, adventurers and editors select eight awards and over $29,000 cash is given away as prizes for these awards.
Eligibility Criteria
- To participate the books must be first editions published either in 2023 or 2024.
- Each book entry should include five (5) finished copies of the book or two (2) advance reading copies. These copies are essential for the preview and judging process and will not be returned.
- New editions of previously published titles may be eligible if they have not been entered in the competition before. Each title can only be entered once.
- Authors and publishers can submit entries for all categories, but coordination is necessary to avoid duplication.
- For the Mountain Article category, the submission must be under 7,000 words and in PDF format. The article must have been published in 2023 or 2024. Please note that scholarly, research, or scientific articles will not be accepted. Each author can submit a maximum of two (2) articles.
- Shipping, customs duties, and taxes are the responsibility of the entrant. Please be aware that using retail values on international shipments may result in additional duty and/or taxes, which will be charged back to the sender.
- All submitted works must be in English.
Application Process
To participate in the festival, you need to complete an online entry form and submit it along with the physical books to the festival office. It is required to provide five finished copies of each title, with a deadline of July 31, 2024, for books published after June 30, 2024. Additionally, for the 2024 competition, a digital copy of the book is now mandatory. It is highly recommended and appreciated to submit the books early.
