Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics 2024 ($5,000 Prize) – Call for Nominations

The Center for Journalism Ethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has announced the call for nominations for the Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics 2024.

The Shadid Award is currently in its 15th year, as it recognizes/honors journalists who work for reputable news organizations or publish independently for their moral choices in covering stories in print, broadcast, and digital media.

The Shadid Award is different from previous journalistic accolades in that it recognizes the difficult decisions that reporters make behind the scenes to achieve high-impact stories while honouring their ethical obligations to sources, the public, and those impacted by news events.

The Anthony Shadid Awards a $5,000 prize plus travel expenses to accept the honor and discuss the reporting at an awards ceremony in Washington, DC in the spring

Eligibility Requirements

  • The prize does not cover books, documentaries, or other long-term projects; instead, it is restricted to current journalism.
  • Reporting completed for articles that were released or aired in 2023 should be included in entries.
  • Nominations for oneself or others may come from individuals or news organizations.
  • No more than three nominations may be submitted by one news organization.

How to Nominate

By participating in this competition, Candidates permit the Center for Journalism Ethics to highlight their participation as an exemplary case of moral ethical-making.

The nomination letter of the finalist will be made available on the Center for Journalism Ethics website.

In addition, the finalist’s work might be considered for the student journalist ethical curriculum, the Shadid Curriculum. Hence, the finalist might be asked to submit a PDF of his/her story that isn’t protected by the paywall of his/her news organization.

What is the Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics?

The Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics honors a journalist or group of journalists for their exceptional application of ethical standards. Anthony Shadid, a former student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who now works as a foreign correspondent for The New York Times and The Washington Post, is honored with this prize. Mr. Shadid’s brave and well-informed journalism earned him two Pulitzer Prizes. He passed away in February 2012 while travelling across the Syrian border due to health issues.

You can nominate yourself, a journalist, or a group of journalists who have exhibited outstanding commitment to ethical standards in the publication of important public journalism during 2023.

When will the finalists be announced?

The announcement of finalists by the committee is expected to be done in late February.
