Applications are open for the Andrew Levy Scholarship 2023! The University of Edinburgh is pleased to offer scholarships to black African and Caribbean heritage applicants from low-income families. all thanks to a gift from the family of the late Andrea Levy.
Andrea Levy Scholarships were established in 2020 in honor of the multi-award-winning novelist Andrea Levy. Ms. Levy, who was born in London to Jamaican parents, had longstanding family and personal ties to Edinburgh and Scotland, and the University of Edinburgh is proud to host this scholarship program as a tribute to her legacy.
Andrea Levy Scholarship’s Aims and Benefits
- The Andrea Levy scholarship aims to pay for your tuition fee and provide a stipend of £5,000 per year to assist with living expenses.
- This scholarship is valid for the duration of your program of study, which is usually four years but can be extended.
- This award does not affect your eligibility for an Access Edinburgh Scholarship (£1,000–£5,000 per year, depending on circumstances), and you can hold both awards concurrently.
- The total amount available for living expenses is thus up to £10,000 for each year of your course.
- The scholarship will cover the full cost of your tuition fees, which for most students in the “rest of the UK” is £9,250 per year.
- If you live in Scotland, the Student Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS) will cover your tuition.

Qualification Requirements for the Andrea Levy Scholarship
To be accepted for this scholarship:
- You must be one of the following ethnicities: Black Caribbean, Black African, Black Other, Mixed-White/Black Caribbean, Mixed-White/Black African, or Other mixed backgrounds with Caribbean ancestry We especially encourage applicants with Caribbean ancestry to apply.
- You must begin your first undergraduate full-time degree program at the University of Edinburgh in the academic year 2023-2024.
- You must be evaluated for fee status as a “home” student (meaning that you ordinarily live in Scotland, England, Wales, or Northern Ireland).
- You must have a household income of less than £34,000 per year.
How to Apply for the Andrea Levy Scholarship 2023
In applying for this scholarship, you will be required to provide the following details:
- Full name
- Student number (for example, S1234567) or, if not known, your UCAS number
- Name of the current school or college you attend
- Ethnicity
- An email address
- confirmation that you have applied for, been assessed for, and expect to receive the maximum level of government support for tuition fees and maintenance loans through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS), Student Finance (England, Wales, or Northern Ireland), and that you have given permission for the university to share your information.
- confirmation that this is your first undergraduate degree program and that you have never started a degree program before.
- confirmation that you understand that, as part of the selection process, external representatives supporting this scholarship will review your application and any submitted documentation.
- consent to the use of your UCAS references (personal and supporting statements) as part of the selection process.
- Candidates who have been shortlisted will be invited for an interview to discuss their goals and answer any questions they may have. Additional direction and details will be given.

Andrea Levy Scholarship Interview Date, Process, and Location
Applications will be assessed based on the following requirements:
- Household income: Applicants with a household income of £23,999 or less will be given priority. Applicants with a household income of £24,000 to £33,900 are also eligible to apply.
- The application statement, which should be between 600 and 900 words long, should explain: What academic and personal accomplishments are you most proud of? This could include overcoming a difficult personal situation. There are no correct or incorrect answers; just narrate your story.
- Explain why the scholarship will benefit your studies and how it will help you achieve your academic goals.
- How your education will benefit your community and society in the future
Furthermore, any other personal or academic circumstances that may have influenced or impacted applicants’ education to date may also be considered.
