The distinguished Dorrit Hoffleit Undergraduate Research Scholarship is named in honor of Dr. E. Dorrit Hoffleit, a luminary in the field of astronomy who dedicated over fifty years to Yale’s Department of Astronomy. Dr. Hoffleit’s illustrious career includes serving as the director of the Maria Mitchell Observatory for more than two decades.
Her impact extends far beyond her impressive resume, as she authored the Bright Star Catalogue and co-authored The General Catalogue of Trigonometric Stellar Parallaxes. Recognizing her outstanding contributions, she was awarded the George Van Biesbroeck Prize by the American Astronomical Society in 1988.
