The mobile manufacturing company, Xiaomi has now unveiled a second-gen foldable phone on Thursday. This move will be rounding off a very busy week of launches of foldable phones that also saw both Samsung and Motorola reveal more foldable of their own.

The Mix Fold 2, which is a follow-up to the Chinese company’s inaugural foldable phone, is a foldable that Xiaomi is marketing for its ultraslim design which is in a form of a book, among other features. When the phone is folded, the device measures 11.2mm, thus meaning that it’s the world’s slimmest commercially available book-style foldable phone.

The phone is approximately 4mm thinner than the recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 4 of Samsung. Xiaomi credits its “micro waterdrop” hinge for helping to achieve the slim design, which lets for a tighter fold on the flexible display panel that is within the 8.8mm-tall hinge structure.

The Mix Fold 2 Features

The Mix Fold 2 as you should know features two displays which are a 6.56-inch panel on the cover, which then expands into an 8-inch interior screen when you choose to open it up. And as for the cameras, there’s one 20-megapixel front-facing sensor as well as three cameras on the rear, and this is including a telephoto camera.

The Mix Fold 2 is reported to run on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen Plus 1 chipset, which is the same as the one found in Samsung and Motorola’s latest foldable phones. The phone also has a Harman Kardon dual-speaker setup, a 4,500-mAh double-cell battery, and also 67-watt fast charging support. The base version of the Mi Mix Folds is priced at 8,999 yuan, which should convert to approximately $1,330, £1,090, or AU$1,860. The phone will only be released in mainland China.

Foldable Phones Account for Just a Sliver of the Overall Smartphone Market

And despite the flurry of launches this week alone, foldable phones account for just a sliver of the overall smartphone market, even though shipments skyrocketed in 2021 in contrast to 2020. And according to the International Data Corporation, 7.1 million foldables were shipped in 2021 alone, marking a 264.3% increase from the year 2020.

The mix fold 2 was announced at a virtual vent as well as a human-sized robot and a lineup of other products from Xiaomi as well as a new tablet and a budget phone.
