Have you heard of the World Bank-IFC MAS GrowAfrica Intern Program For Young Professionals 2024? GrowAfrica is in search of six interns who can help with Upstream. And Advisory projects to reduce operational risks in IFC investment projects.
These projects involve tasks such as enhancing supply chains, addressing food security issues, fostering collaboration with the World Bank, empowering farmers, enhancing product traceability, and ensuring food safety.
Interns will play a crucial role in advancing the agriculture industry and gaining hands-on experience in this field. They will be supervised by the Project Leader and Project Coordinator.
The projects include:
- GrowAfrica Project 1: Expanding an Agri-commodity trader’s capacity to source from farmers.
- GrowAfrica Project 3: Supporting sustainable practices and enhancing business management for coffee farmers in Uganda.
- GrowAfrica Project 3: Enhance agricultural production in Angola’s poultry and coffee sectors.
- GrowAfrica Project 4: Boosting productivity through training and establishing a robust supply chain to rejuvenate the cotton sector in Mozambique.
- GrowAfrica Project 5: Developing a food security heatmap to identify investment opportunities that can reduce reliance on imports in Africa.
- GrowAfrica Project 6: Engaging and collaborating with World Bank operations to leverage IFC’s private sector experience.”
Program Details
The IFC MAS GrowAfrica Intern Program aims to provide graduate students with a valuable platform to bridge their academic knowledge with practical experience, facilitating a seamless transition into professional careers. The program offers hands-on opportunities for interns to contribute to agribusiness development in Africa while also enhancing their own skills in project delivery. Interns can expect to benefit from a dynamic learning environment and various opportunities, including:

Scope of the Assignments
The interns are required to:
- Support the Project Coordinator in organizing and overseeing the training of farmers on Good Agricultural Practices by experienced agronomists,
- Assist the Project Coordinator in managing the training and mentoring of Licensed Buying Agents on proper record-keeping and traceability within the sesame supply chain by seasoned agronomists,
- Aid in compiling and organizing a database of pertinent project documents and drafting project reports,
- Assist in project planning and collecting quantitative data to monitor and evaluate project indicators,
- Monitor and maintain a risk register, promptly notifying the Project Coordinator/Project Leader of any changes to project risks,
- Assist in setting up demonstration sites in each of the eight Local Government Areas (LGA) to facilitate participatory learning by farmers,
- Provide supervision and guidance to farmers in producing high-quality certified seed for sale to sesame farmers through the Community Based Seed Production Programs,
- Assist the program team in developing materials and content for key activities, launches, and communications outreach,
- Contribute to sharing best practices and lessons learned to support planning and knowledge sharing,
- Promote and encourage the adoption of Sustainable Agro-ecological practices and technologies among smallholder sesame farmers,
- Help in creating a heatmap for priority crops in Africa, as well as participating in data collection efforts and engaging with stakeholders,
- Support in establishing connections with the World Bank by contributing to the design and execution of World Bank initiatives,
- Assist in organizing and facilitating project meetings and field trips for stakeholders and project management to project locations,
- Engage in any other relevant tasks as assigned by the Project Coordinator/Project Leader.
Remuneration for World Bank-IFC MAS GrowAfrica Intern Program For Young professionals
The internship program will consist of the following components:
- The working hours will not exceed 40 hours per week, with a maximum limit of 160 hours per month.
- The stipend for the internship will be determined through negotiation, taking into account the individual’s experience and qualifications.
Eligibility Criteria
- Preferably hold a master’s or PhD degree, and possess at least two years of professional experience.
- Currently studying a discipline related to agriculture, such as crop science, agricultural economics, agronomy, soil management, social science, economics, or other relevant fields. Having experience in specialized areas associated with the projects described in Section B, Project Backgrounds, would be advantageous.
- Demonstrate the ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, handle multiple responsibilities, and perform well under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Possess effective communication skills in multicultural and multilingual settings (English is required for all projects, Hausa for projects in Nigeria, Portuguese for Angola/Mozambique, and French for projects in Senegal). Also, exhibit the ability to work harmoniously as part of a diverse and culturally-rich team.
- Display sufficient knowledge of the challenges and opportunities in African agribusiness.
- Exhibit clear and systematic thinking, showcasing sound judgement and problem-solving abilities.
- Have a solid grasp of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media platforms.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently or collaboratively in a team.
- Be results-oriented and possess strong teamwork skills.
- Show proficiency in interpersonal communication.
How To Apply
The anticipated commencement date is set for the period of 1 June to 31 July 2024, with a duration of at least two months but not exceeding six months. During the internship, the intern will be under the guidance of the Project Leader (PL) and directly supervised by the Project Coordinator assigned to each respective project.
