TikTok, the popular short video platform owned by ByteDance, a Chinese Internet technology company, disclosed in its latest Community Guidelines Enforcement report that it removed a staggering 176.5 million videos in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Among these, 1.7 million videos originated from Nigerian users, highlighting the platform’s ongoing efforts to enforce its content policies.

The report outlined that Nigeria was among the top 50 countries where videos violating TikTok’s regulations were prevalent. These countries collectively accounted for over 90% of all content removals during the quarter.

According to TikTok, the removed videos infringed upon various guidelines, including those related to integrity and authenticity, privacy and security, safety, and civility.

The platform emphasized its commitment to upholding strict policies and leveraging advanced detection mechanisms to swiftly identify and remove problematic content.

TikTok spokesperson commented, “From October 7 through to the end of 2023, we removed more than 169 million fake accounts globally, and we have removed about 1.2 million bot comments on content tagged with hashtags related to the Israel-Hamas war.”

Combating Fake Accounts and Artificial Engagement

The report also revealed TikTok’s proactive approach to combating fake accounts and artificial engagement. During the fourth quarter of 2023, TikTok removed more than 169 million fake accounts globally.

Additionally, approximately 1.2 million bot comments related to the Israel-Hamas conflict were taken down from content tagged with relevant hashtags.

TikTok highlighted an increase in the removal of advertisements due to policy violations during the same period.

The platform removed 1.5 million ads for violating its advertising standards, reflecting a rise from the previous quarter.

TikTok Aims to Maintain Vibrant Community

In response to emerging threats, TikTok reiterated its commitment to detecting and addressing malicious activities aimed at manipulating popularity metrics.

Despite facing challenges such as fake engagement, the platform expressed its determination to maintain a trustworthy and enjoyable experience for its vibrant community.
