The prize was introduced with the vision of acknowledging the crucial role of a thriving research community in global economic well-being. This vision can only be realized by fostering and supporting the most exceptional and promising individuals in their chosen research fields.

Categories

  • The research mentioned in the participant’s thesis must fall under one of the specified categories, known as Subject Tracks. These categories include:
  • Cell and Molecular Biology: This area of study concentrates on investigating the intricate mechanisms and phenomena occurring at the cellular and molecular levels. It encompasses research ranging from analyzing molecular processes to studying single cells, tissues, and even whole organ systems.
  • Genomics, Proteomics, and Systems Biology approach: This category encompasses research that utilizes genomics, proteomics, integrative omics, and systems biology approaches. It includes computational methods aimed at gaining a comprehensive understanding of living cells, organisms, and species.
  • Ecology and Environment: Research in this category explores the interactions between organisms and their environment, including the influence of human activity on these processes.
  • Molecular Medicine: This category involves research that builds upon the molecular understanding of human diseases. The aim is to develop preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic approaches, including personalized medicine.

Benefits

  • The grand prize winner is awarded $30,000 USD, while winners of the other three categories each receive $10,000 USD.
  • The essay that wins the grand prize is published in Science magazine, and the winning essays of the other categories are published online at Science.
  • The four winners are invited to Sweden for the prize ceremony, which takes place during the same week as the Nobel Prize ceremony.
  • During the ceremony week, the winners participate in a scientific symposium to present their work, attend several social events, and get the opportunity to network with notable scientific researchers in their respective fields.
  • Each awardee is allowed to bring one guest to the festivities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The prize is open to individuals from all countries, regardless of their gender or race.
  • Applicants must have successfully obtained their Ph.D. degree within the timeframe of January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2023.
  • Participants are only allowed to submit one application during this specified time frame, and the research described in the entry must have been conducted while the candidate was a graduate student.

How to Apply

To enter the competition, candidates must submit the following documents:

  • A completed Entry Form.
  • An essay, written by the candidate, which explains the thesis work and its implications for research in the chosen Subject Track. This essay must not exceed 1,000 words and may contain one figure or table.
  • A one-page reference letter from either the advisor or a member of the thesis committee. The letter should evaluate the candidate’s capabilities and reflect on the importance of their research.
  • The thesis abstract, must not exceed four double-spaced typed pages.
  • A list comprising of the following:
  • Full citations of every published or in-press paper on the study described in the essay.
  • Any academic or professional awards and recognitions that the candidate has obtained.
  • Any relevant professional experience they have.
