Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC) 2024

The upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October 2024, hosted in Samoa, has the theme ‘One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth’. This theme highlights the significance of addressing the challenges faced by Small Island Developing States, like Samoa, which are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Additionally, communities across the Commonwealth are confronting various issues, including economic growth, peace, and security. Building strong and resilient societies has become more crucial than ever before.

In line with this, the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2024 prompts participants to reflect on their strategies for dealing with adversity and explore how community and culture can foster resilience and hope in a world grappling with an increasing number of global issues.

Eligibility Criteria

Senior Category

(Born between 16 May 2005 and 15 May 2010 (14-18 years of age))

  • Queen Elizabeth II has remarked that incremental actions, rather than monumental leaps, can lead to enduring change. What specific small actions can you pursue to help address the climate crisis?
  • Deliver a speech highlighting the most pressing issue confronting the world today, and discuss how Commonwealth values can be utilized to address it.
  • The Samoan way of life revolves around the concept of ‘aiga’, meaning ‘family’, and embodies values such as selflessness, hospitality, cooperation, respect, and dignity. What core values and ideas from your own culture can be applied to promote cooperation and community within the Commonwealth?
  • The Commonwealth’s London Declaration endeavors to strive for peace, liberty, and progress. Write a letter to your President or Prime Minister outlining strategies to achieve these goals.

Junior Category

(Born after May 16, 2010 (ages 14 and below))

  • What new habit could you develop to make a positive contribution towards a more environmentally friendly Commonwealth?
  • Create a conversation between yourself and your grandparent about resilience and hope. What insights can you share with the older generation, and what can you learn from them?
