Just as the new generation wound down and new ones ramps up, Nintendo switch continue to find itself at the top of NPD’s sale charts for many months. But in this September things came out differently and the switch finally was unseated by the new top-seller the PlayStation 5.

NPD’s Mat Piscatella today on Twitter reported that the PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in the United States in September, at least just as NPD’s count stated. To be more specific, Piscatella stated that PS5 was the month’s best-seller in both units and dollars. Well as long as 2021 is concerned, PS remains the best-selling console in terms of dollars, while the Nintendo Switch is the best-selling when it comes to console in units.

Nintendo’s Sales Streak

According to Piscatella, it breaks the long 33-month streak for the Nintendo Switch. The last time that Nintendo was not the first at hardware sales was November 2018, when the PlayStation 4 led in total unit sales.

The switch staying on top for a very long time was not a surprise to most of us as they were the only one among the three big platform holders that did not refresh its lineup last year. While Sony and Microsoft decided to launch the new consoles close to the end of 2020 and essentially hit the reset button on sales momentum, Nintendo decided to remain with the switch and didn’t stop selling.

PlayStation 5 on Top

The fact that the PlayStation 5 came out as the top in September 2021 could also indicate that the stock is slowly becoming more obtainable. While there remains a very long way to go before supplies eventually catch up to demand entirely, this might just be a sign that supply constrictions are starting to reduce with little ease. Well sooner, we will hear what NPD has to say about the state of consoles during the ever-important holiday shopping season.
