NCC and NIMC Collaborate

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have announced a joint effort to improve the National Identification Number (NIN)-SIM linkage process for telecom users in Nigeria. This collaboration aims to enhance security and service delivery in the country.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by Ayodele Babalola from NIMC and Reuben Muoka from NCC. It highlights the importance of linking SIM registrations with NINs for security reasons and better service provision.

The Partnership Will Focus On Streamlining the NIN-SIM Linkage Process

The partnership will focus on streamlining the NIN-SIM linkage process to ensure a smooth experience for subscribers. NIMC will provide support to NCC in verifying NINs associated with SIM registrations, ensuring accurate subscriber data.

Furthermore, the agencies will align their policies and regulatory frameworks to integrate NIN-SIM linkage processes within the telecom ecosystem. They will also conduct public education campaigns to increase awareness and compliance with the linkage directives.

The NIN-SIM Linkage Policy

The NIN-SIM linkage policy was first announced by the federal government in December 2020, requiring all telecom subscribers in Nigeria to link their SIM with their unique NIN. Telecom companies were directed to disconnect SIMs without linked NINs by February 28, 2024, following NCC’s directive in December 2023.
