Applications are open for the Marlène and Paolo Fresco Fellowship for African Studies 2024-2025. This fellowship aims to encourage and support research on cultural exchanges between the African continent and the Mediterranean world from approximately 1250 to 1750.

It offers a six-month residential fellowship for the spring term of 2025 (January-June).

The fellowship is tailored for postdoctoral scholars specializing in fields related to African history, such as art history, archaeology, expressive cultures, musicology, economic history, intellectual, political, and religious history, as well as literature and languages.

Preference will be given to advanced research projects exploring the relationship between the African continent and Italy during the early modern period, spanning the 14th to the 17th centuries.

Benefits

  • The grant amounts to USD 5,200 per month, generously provided by Paolo Fresco, along with a one-time supplement of up to USD 1,500 for relocation expenses.
  • Fellows are required to reside in the Florence area and spend a minimum of three days per week at the Center. Whenever possible, a rent-free apartment will be provided, but if not available, a housing subsidy will be offered.
  • Fellows are responsible for obtaining a visa, permesso di soggiorno, and health coverage, as well as determining if family members require accompanying documentation.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must hold a PhD at the time of application and must not be pursuing a second PhD.
  • Proficiency in English, Italian, or French is required.
  • Successful candidates should possess a strong background in African history and its global interactions during the early modern era.

Application Requirements 

  • Applications must be written in English or Italian and submitted electronically by midnight (Cambridge, MA time) on February 29, 2024. Each scholar may apply for only one fellowship type per academic year.
  • Two scholars familiar with the applicant’s work must submit recommendations online by March 4, 2024. Recommendations may be written in English, French, or Italian. Applicants should register their referees early to allow ample time for submission.
