German Embassy in South Africa Micro Project Grant for South African NGOs, NPOs, & civil Society. (Up to 25.000 Euro in Funding)

The micro-project scheme is a component of Germany’s larger development cooperation efforts aimed at reducing poverty and enhancing living conditions. Its objective is to address the fundamental needs of the most economically disadvantaged social groups, particularly those residing in rural areas.

The German Embassy, through the Micro-Project-Scheme, aims to assist NGOs, NPOs, and other civil society organizations that work towards empowering marginalized and impoverished communities, as well as those undergoing a period of transition.

The sectors in South Africa that receive the primary focus of support are:

  • Women’s Rights
  • Anti-Discrimination of any kind
  • Just Energy Transition
  • Local Economic Development/Alternative Livelihoods.

Funding

  • Grants of up to 25,000 euros are available for funding.

Eligibility criteria

  • Support is provided to projects in South Africa that are unable to secure funding from their own responsible bodies, such as Community Based, Non-Governmental, and Faith-Based Organizations.
  • Examples of eligible projects include the installation of boreholes, development of garden projects, the establishment of shelters for vulnerable children, construction or renovation of school classrooms (limited to Eswatini and Lesotho), and acquisition of income-generating items (such as sewing machines or tools for carpentry or locksmith trades).
  • Projects that primarily benefit government agencies, business entities, or individuals seeking support for their private businesses or services are not eligible for funding.
  • The applicant organization is required to contribute either financially or through their own labor (self-help).

Application Process

To apply for funding, please send the completed application form  to the German Embassy. The application should include the following information:

  • Description of your organization, including details about its members and financial background.
  • References to any previous projects initiated by your organization, demonstrating your experience.
  • Explanation of the project for which you are seeking financial support, including the target group it aims to benefit.
  • Detailed financial estimate of the project, including your organization’s self-contribution, the requested donor contribution, membership dues, and costs related to land, as well as the projected time and location of the project.

In addition to the application form, please submit the following documents/information via email to the email address provided on the Official Website. Official application form, signed and dated by two individuals responsible for the project, specifying the project title and the requested funding amount.

  • Valid passports or any other form of official identification for the two individuals signing the form as responsible personnel for the project.
