‘Project 774 LG Connectivity,’ a project of Nigeria’s Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, intends to link 774 local government secretariats in Nigeria to the Internet.

It is anticipated that the connectivity program will boost digital access and directly and indirectly create approximately 300 new jobs.

Under the President’s (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) Renewed Hope Agenda, the project will be managed in cooperation with Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited and Galaxy Backbone, according to CIDE Minister Bosun Tijani.

LG Connectivity Seeks to Address the Issue of Limited Internet and Digital Access

774 Project Through the provision of dependable and reasonably priced Internet and resources, LG Connectivity seeks to address the issue of limited Internet and digital access. Internet connectivity will therefore be available outside of government buildings, empowering local communities, raising public participation, and promoting inclusive growth.

The construction of infrastructure, capacity building, digital inclusion, monitoring, and evaluation are all part of the project’s implementation plan. Investment in broadband infrastructure, such as fiber-optic cables, wireless networks, and satellite connectivity, is covered under infrastructure development. According to reports, Nigeria’s broadband penetration fell by 10.7% towards the end of January 2024.

Establishing regular monitoring and evaluation methods is vital to guarantee accountability, assess the project’s impact, and pinpoint opportunities for enhancement. In October 2023, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy teamed up with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) for the first phase of the 3 million technical talent program.

The Project is Believed to be in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope program

The project is believed to be in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope program. Its goals are to advance Nigeria’s digital economy and nurture its technical talent.

To safeguard citizen data, the government announced intentions to digitize public services in January 2024. As a component of “Project 774 LG Connectivity,” the initiative also involves Galaxy Backbone, a government IT supplier.

Furthermore, Nigeria’s Internet user base increased from 26% in 2018 to over 38% in 2022, and by 2027, 60% of the nation’s population is expected to be online.

Currently, the Nigerian government declared on March 14, 2023, that a $618 million tech fund intended for young investors would be opening. The fund would assist investors in Nigeria’s tech and creative industries who require assistance in acquiring capital.
