Blue Light: Harmful Effects & Ways to Minimize Eye Damage

Speaking of Blue Light: Harmful Effects & Ways to Minimize Eye Damage, the human eye is a complex machine that has so many delicate components. Every part of the eye works miraculously together to see and perceive things in the world and send these signals to the brain where they are translated, processed, and responded to with appropriate responses or actions.

Blue Light: Harmful Effects & Ways to Minimize Eye Damage

Taking care of the eye is extremely important as it is one of the main 5 senses in the human body. Exposure to electronic devices can have a harmful effect on the eye especially due to blue light.

Blue light glasses are now an option that is available for all age groups of people who use electronic devices extensively to protect their eyes from blue light exposure. Blue light is not only limited to electronics usage, blue light is present in many types of LED devices including the lighting that people use at home.

What is Blue Light?

Blue light is nothing but a small part of the white light that comes naturally from the sun. The sun’s white light comprises 7 different colors with different bandwidths. Blue light is one of the shortest bandwidth colored lights in this spectrum. It has high energy but within a low bandwidth. This is why these rays are more easily penetrable through the eyes into the human body.

Blue light is emitted as part of the normal white light that is reflected from all kinds of electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops and desktop screens, Televisions, etc. Even the LED and Fluorescent bulbs that are used at home contain blue light. Blue light tends to have a negative effect on the eye and can cause the following effects:

  • Blurred Vision
  • Eye Dryness
  • Irritation
  • Itchiness
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Progressive loss of Vision
  • Tiredness and Dizziness
  • Sleep Deprivation
  • Headaches etc.

In severe cases, blue light has also been linked to cancers due to extremely high exposure, especially at nighttime. Macular Degeneration is also a retinal disorder where the retina gets progressively weak. This happens because almost all of the blue light can travel straight through the retina. This can have adverse effects on the eye causing Macular degeneration, permanent changes to vision, and even cancer in some.

Blocking out Blue Light

It is impossible to work around blue light exposure as there are so many sources of light that do emit blue light. Even the smallest and shortest of exposure tends to have some of these aforementioned symptoms.

The only way to manage blue light is by using blue light glasses that can help in cutting off blue light, especially when working with electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, desktops, and watching TV for long hours.

It is easy to buy a blue block lens from the local optician with or without power. A film is added to the spectacles that help in reflecting the blue light and does not let it penetrate the glasses, thereby protecting the eyes from any blue light damage.

This film can be added to specs with or without power, so even if users do not have any vision problems, one can still opt to buy clear vision blue block glasses so that they can be worn when using electronic devices for longer periods. This is one of the safest methods to avoid blue light and to protect the human eye from the damages caused by blue light.
