Every year, BPM announces an open request for feature-length documentaries and short films (nonfiction or narrative) that are currently in research and development, pre-production, production, or post-production. Each project must be appropriate for public media distribution. The area of concentration of the 2023 Open call is “Climate Stories”.
BPM is searching for traditional media projects that present the voice of the Black community in relation to our changing environment. The content priority includes a broad range of creative techniques. Proposals should tell an engaging story, demonstrate a thorough mastery of the subject, and detail an original and creative style approach meant to shed light on the issues, generate discussion, and point to appropriate solutions to the current challenges.
About Black Public Media
Black Public Media (BPM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the work of African Diaspora nonfiction multimedia storytellers. Black Public Media, founded in 1979 as the National Black Programming Consortium, has paved the road for Black filmmakers to produce documentary films shown widely on public television. It has recently assisted Black creators in working in emerging media genres such as web series, virtual, and augmented reality through professional development and pitch programs as well as training possibilities.

Benefits
Production funding will be awarded to projects in two categories.
- In the broadcast length/documentary category, up to five (5) projects will receive $40,000 as well as an invitation to pitch for additional funding at PitchBLACK in April 2024.
- At PitchBLACK, one broadcast-length/documentary project will receive up to $150,000 in production funding.
- In the shorts (documentary or scripted) category, one stand-alone or a limited series will receive $30,000 in production funding.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for this opportunity, you must have the following qualifications:
- The applicant must be the producer or director of the project.
- Applicant must have at least three years of professional producing and/or directing experience, or the project must have a senior producer associated to it.
- Candidate must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
- A person of color must be among the key creative employees (producer, director, writer, or editor).
- A video clip must be included with all submissions. Research and development projects must comprise a full-length completed work by the applicant.
- Production projects must contain a 10-minute sample of the project to be submitted. To be eligible, projects in post-production at some point must have a full-length rough or fine cut.
- Candidate must be able to finish the project in 18 months or less.

- Applicant must have artistic, financial, and editorial authority over the planned production, as well as ownership of the copyright.
- Foreign-based, owned, or controlled projects or producing firms are ineligible. Neither are they commercial, promotional, or student films.
