The Application portal for Black Mountain Institute (BMI) Shearing Fellowship 2022 for Emerging Writers closes at 11:59 pm PT on November 1, 2022.
The BMI Shearing Fellowship is for emerging and distinguished writers who have published at least one book with a trade or literary press. Every academic year, the Shearing Fellowship is hosted by the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute.
The BMI Shearing Fellowship will have Visiting fellows join a community of writers and scholars in a thriving literary scene in Las Vegas and on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Fellows will be supported by individuals and groups that share the commitment to bringing writers and the literary imagination into the heart of public life.

The Black Mountain Institute (BMI) is based in Las Vegas, Nevada, a unique city for creativity and the arts. The BMI programs and activities serve both local and international audiences.
There is a question that governs all aspects of BMI operations that is, “how writers and their honest, artful expression can galvanize the community, support open societies, and facilitate creative approaches to man’s most confronting problems?
BMI has partners throughout Southern Nevada and around the world. It facilitates intersections between local talent, emerging and distinguished writers, and artists from around the world.
BMI Shearing Fellowship
The BMI Shearing Fellowship does not require any formal teaching requirements. All the visiting fellows will maintain an in-office presence of 10 hours a week, along with 10 hours of service to the community.
Additionally, the visiting fellows are expected to engage in a substantial way with BMI’s community, in ways that connect to their interests and skills. Successfully selected fellows will craft a plan in partnership with BMI.

Benefits of Enrollment for BMI Shearing Fellowship
Upon acceptance for the Shearing fellowship, the fellows will receive the following benefits;
- Four-month compensation payment of $20,000
- letter of appointment;
- An Eligibility cert. for optional health coverage;
- Good Office space in the BMI offices on the campus of UNLV;
- Coverage for Housing (fellows cover some utilities) in a unique and vibrant arts complex in the bustling district of downtown Las Vegas which is home to The Writer’s Block
- A Recognition at BMI as a “Shearing Fellow.”

- Successful Finalists will be asked to send copies of their books.
- Please note that Applicants must have at least one book published by a trade press.
- The selection of Candidates is made by a committee comprised of staff and community members at BMI.
Criteria for BMI Shearing Fellowship Qualification
- Fellows must be Open to emerging and distinguished writers;
- Eligible candidates are those who have published at least one book by a trade press.
Documents Required for Application
- A Personal statement of 3 Pages Max. Stating your interest in being part of the Las Vegas literary community, and a practical description of how you envision fulfilling your service hours and engaging the Las Vegas community.
- The statement should also include the writing project(s) you will work on while in residency.
- Writing sample of 10 pages maximum with double-spaced,
- A résumé or CV.
