Applications for the SDG Lab-Rethinking Economics Beyond GDP Essay Competition 2024 are now open. The competition, scheduled to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, is fully funded for Successful applicants to have an opportunity to explore holistic economic evaluation.

Beyond GDP Essay Competition

The Beyond GDP Essay Competition is a collaborative effort of the SDG Lab (a multistakeholder initiative that contributes to implementing the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Goals),  and Rethinking Economics, a group of academic scholars and students from different countries.

An Overview of Beyond GDP Essay Competition

There is no doubt one of the most potent figures today is the Gross Domestic Product commonly referred to as the GDP. GDP is generally used to measure a nation’s economic activity. However, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been applied inadvertently in various contexts, including being served as a stand-in for development, and well-being.

The essay competition endeavors to stimulate critical thinking among youth, prompting them to reflect on transcending the limitations of GDP-centric assessments. Participants are tasked with envisioning a Framework to Value What Counts beyond GDP, elucidating values, principles, and challenges paramount to reshaping economic priorities.

Eligibility Criteria

Entrants under the age of 30, irrespective of their affiliation with Rethinking Economics, are invited to submit essays.

Prizes and Benefits

  • Ten (10) outstanding essays will be featured in a joint publication by Rethinking Economics, the SDG Lab, and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), amplifying the reach and impact of the participants’ insights.
  • The authors of the top five essays will receive an exclusive invitation to the meeting on moving Beyond GDP, hosted at the UN Geneva.
  • Travel and accommodation expenses of up to EUR 1,300 per person will be covered.
  • Visa Application Assistance: While winners are responsible for their visa applications, the SDG Lab will furnish them with invitation letters to facilitate the process.

Submission Process

  • Essays should span between 700 to 1000 words, articulating a cogent argument in the author’s unique voice.

Evaluation Process

A discerning jury comprising members of the SDG Lab and Rethinking Economics will meticulously assess the submissions, discerning originality, coherence, and depth of analysis.
