Call for Applications for the AREF-MRC Towards Leadership Programme 2023/24 is now Open. The programme is created to empower outstanding scientists in Africa, to advance their research skills and help them emerge as leaders in the global health research ecosystem.
AREF MRC Towards Leadership Programme 2023
The Africa Research Excellence Fund, commonly referred to as AREF, has announced the “Towards Leadership Programme” in collaboration with the renowned UKRI Medical Research Council. The programme will take place from October 2023 to October 2024, combining two residential workshops and a virtual workshop.
The programme has been structured to enhance successful Candidate’s capabilities and also to empower emerging scientists in Africa to compete at the same level for UKRI medical research and other major funding opportunities in global health research.
The program will have grants issued to effective teams and building rewarding research careers.

Conditions for the AREF-MRC Towards Leadership Programme 2023
The following conditions must be met by applicants to be eligible for Together Leadership Programme:
- Prospective Candidates should be nationals of an African country to be eligible to participate
- Should be a current employee in Africa by a recognized university and/or specialist research institution.
- Candidates should be early career researchers, however, must have completed their research education and are currently in the early stages of leading their own research group.
- Candidates must hold a research doctorate (PhD/DPhil/MD) from a recognized academic institution
- Should be responsible for managing one or more research students and be involved in building research collaborations.
- Candidates must show proof of being at the early stages of leading a research team
- Applicants must have experience in obtaining research funding.
