The Africa Exchange Program 2023-2024, is currently accepting applications from suitably qualified researchers in the field of African studies, this exchange program is an Initiative of the Canon Foundation Europe, in collaboration with Kyoto University Japan.

Furthermore, the Africa Exchange Program aims to provide opportunities for fellows from Kyoto University to conduct research in Africa, as well as for scholars from Kyoto University’s partner institutes in Africa to engage in research activities in Kyoto. This initiative promotes academic collaboration and research between Kyoto University and institutions in Africa.

This program offers a unique opportunity for researchers to explore and contribute to the field of African Studies. It also facilitates the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and cultural understanding between Japan and Africa.

About Canon Foundation Europe

The Canon Foundation Europe is a non-profit organization that aims to promote cultural and scientific exchange between Europe and Japan. The Foundation was established in 1987 as a philanthropic initiative by Canon Inc., a leading global technology company.

Canon Foundation was created to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Canon’s operations in Europe and reflects the company’s commitment to fostering cultural and academic collaborations.

The primary objective of the Canon Foundation Europe is to support and promote cooperation between Europe and Japan in the fields of science, culture, and society.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Canon Foundation/ Kyoto University Africa Exchange Program, interested applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • To be eligible, the Prospective Applicants are expected to have an MA degree
  • Applicant must be employed at Kyoto University or Kyoto University’s partner institutions as post-doctoral fellows or faculty members at the time of applying.
  • Applicants must demonstrate excellent research abilities and a strong commitment to African Studies.

Application Process

To apply for the Exchange Program, interested applicants are required to complete the following steps:

  • Prepare a research plan outlining the proposed research project. The research plan should include a clear title, starting and ending dates of the research, and a general cost estimate covering living expenses, travel, research costs, insurance, etc. (maximum 2 pages).
  • Obtain two reference letters, each not exceeding one page. One letter should be from someone who can comment on the applicant’s academic qualifications and professional work, while the other should be a confirmation letter from the prospective host in Africa or Kyoto University who can provide research or work facilities during the proposed period.
  • Prepare a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae. Include a copy of the applicant’s doctoral certificate or highest academic degree.
  • Attach a passport-size photograph of the applicant.
  • Provide a list of academic publications or professional achievements in chronological order, including information on all authors, place and year of publication, and page references.
  • Submit the completed application along with all the supporting documents to the Kyoto University Africa Unit via email at africanunit@kura.kyoto-u.ac.jp.
