TikTok Overtakes YouTube in Average Watch Time in the US – According to a report from app analytics firm App Annie, users of TikTok now spend more time watching content on the app than users do on YouTube. The app first overtook YouTube last year in the US. And it is reported that as of June 2021, its users have watched over 24 hours of content monthly compared to the 22 hours and 40 minutes on YouTube.

The difference is even more pronounced in the UK where TikTok overtook YouTube in May last year. Users in the UK now spend almost 26 hours watching content on the app (TikTok) monthly compared to less than 16 hours spent on YouTube by its users.
The figures collated however include viewership on android devices only and therefore may not be the actual representation of mobile users as a whole. But that aside, the figures show just how fast the app, TikTok, has risen over the past few years. And also given the fact that the videos on the app are short, not more than 3 minutes, it is more impressive. And also not to mention another fact that TikTok has had a torrid past year in the US concerning claims that it would be banned in the US amidst chaotic negotiations – which Biden has formally revoked earlier this year.
But it might interest you to know that YouTube is still very much ahead in time spent overall. And this is due to its two billion users as compared to TikTok’s almost 700 million reported the BBC news. In terms of time spent on android phones among social and entertainment apps, YouTube is still number one excluding iOS apps and users of the app in china pertaining to the first half of this year. Facebook WhatsApp and Instagram take the next three spots with TikTok in number 5. It is also reported that users spend more money on YouTube when compared to TikTok for both iOS and Android devices globally excluding android users in china.
