Dr. Anita Borg spent her adult life with a committed effort to bring about a complete change of mindset towards technology and eliminate hindrances that keep women and minorities from enrolling in computing and technology fields. It was for that reason that Dr. Anita made a proposal for what she called the “50/50 by 2020” initiative.
This initiative targets that by the end of the year 2020, women earning computing degrees would be 50% of the entire graduates. Although, the percentage of Computer Science degrees earned by women is still far from 50% globally.
Therefore, as part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, Google is proud to honor Anita’s memory and support women in technology with the Women Techmakers Scholarship Program. Usually, Techmakers Scholarship for women is a one-time scholarship. This simply means that past beneficiaries of any Google scholarship, both Women Techmakers Scholarship and Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship, are not eligible to apply.
