The program is open to individuals from any country, institution, or discipline, and encourages collaboration by supporting projects that bring together experts from different fields.

STIAS values original ideas and prefers projects that will benefit from interdisciplinary dialogue and contribute new perspectives to the conversation. The program invites individual fellows or project teams, where each member is evaluated on their own merits, to foster a dynamic and interactive environment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • As STIAS Fellows, you are expected to be in residence at STIAS for the duration of your fellowship, with no academic obligations other than working on your proposed research project.
  • To promote diversity, STIAS has a unique program that includes artists-in-residence and short-term Fellows from public commentary and opinion-making fields.
  • The program also accepts applications from young scholars who have completed at least one postdoctoral fellowship (preferably more than one) each year.
  • STIAS does not consider postdoctoral applications outside of agreements with the Volkswagen Foundation.
  • Previously hosted STIAS Fellows are welcome to apply again, but during a five-year cycle, priority is given to first-time applicants.

Evaluation Criteria

STIAS Fellows are chosen based on their academic excellence and the innovative nature of their proposed research project. The following criteria are considered important guidelines:

  • Research level: Does the proposal demonstrate cutting-edge research that pushes the boundaries of knowledge?
  • Originality: Does the project break new ground and offer potential for new insights and discoveries?
  • Interdisciplinary approach: To what extent does the project integrate multiple disciplines, and how will it foster cross-pollination among experts during the residency?
  • Relevance: Is the project suitable for an institute for advanced study, and does it have significance for South Africa and Africa?
  • Feasibility: Is the proposed methodology and research design convincing, and is the applicant well-equipped to deliver on the project?
