ESISMAD Project African Scholarship for African Students 2024 (Fully-funded Scholarship)

The Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme is a joint initiative between the African Union and the European Union, implemented through the Pan-African Partnership. The European Commission’s Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency is responsible for managing the program, in collaboration with the African Union Commission’s Department for Human Resources, Science and Technology.

The program aims to bring together higher education institutions from different regions, requiring them to establish mechanisms to facilitate exchanges, such as curriculum comparisons and recognition of study periods abroad.

This will promote harmonization and standardization of higher education in Africa, aligning with the African Union’s strategy for higher education harmonization. The program also aims to contribute to regional integration and enhance human capital development in Africa, as outlined in Agenda 2063.

Scholarship Objective

The ESIMSAD project aims to achieve the following specific objectives:

  • Enhance the job prospects of students by providing them with valuable skills and experiences
  • Enhance the quality and relevance of higher education in Africa to support the continent’s development goals
  • Strengthen the modernization and internationalization of African higher education institutions to make them more competitive and connected globally
  • Foster the growth of an African higher education and research community that is integrated and collaborative.

Scholarship Benefit

The ESIMSAD project offers a range of benefits to its scholarship recipients, including:

  • Round-trip airfare and visa costs
  • Coverage of tuition fees, registration fees, and service fees (if applicable)
  • Insurance coverage for health, accident, and travel
  • A settling-in allowance
  • A monthly living stipend
  • Funding for research costs associated with mobility of 10 months or longer
  • Female master’s and doctoral students will also receive an additional stipend for each academic term.

Eligibility Criteria

The ESIMSAD project is offering scholarships to individuals from African countries only. The scholarships are available for students and researchers in the following fields:

  • Materials Science
  • Solar Energy Physics
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Materials Electrochemistry and Energy Technologies
  • Physical Chemistry

The scholarships are exclusively open to African nationalities, and applications from other regions will not be considered.

Selection Process

  • The ESIMSAD Scholarship is a collaborative program between four African partner universities, which allows selected students and staff to pursue postgraduate studies, research, and teaching opportunities at these institutions. The participating universities are Addis Ababa University, located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 

Required Documents

All documents submitted for the ESIMSAD Scholarship must be in the English language. Additionally, each host university may require additional mandatory documents that are specific to their institution, such as:

  • A pre-acceptance letter
  • Specific certificates
  • Language test results
  • And other documents that may vary from one host university to another

Master’s Degree Program

Essential Documents:

  • Two (2) recommendation letters: One of which must come from your most recent project supervisor.
  • Personal statement: One is required for each Host University with the option to apply to a maximum of 2 Host Universities. Each personal statement must be unique.
  • Curriculum Vitae, maximum of 4 pages.
  • Transcript of Records from your Bachelor’s studies.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate.
  • Valid Passport or National ID.
  • Previous Intra-Africa/ACP Award Declaration (ESIMSAD PREVIOUS INTRA-AFRICA AWARD DECLARATION)

Additional Documents:

  • Language proficiency certificates, if requested by the Host University.
  • Supporting documents for disadvantaged group status, if applicable.
  • For applicants in Target Group 2, please submit a confirmation of registration for a postgraduate degree at your home university.
  • Any other relevant documents you believe will enhance your application.

Important Note:

  • Pre-acceptance Letter from the Host University. This document is mandatory for evaluation for the ESIMSAD Scholarship. Failure to submit this letter as part of your application will automatically disqualify your submission.

Masters Credit for All Target Groups

Essential Documents:

  • Valid Passport or National ID
  • Proof of enrollment in a Master’s program at your Home University
  • Transcript of Records from your Master’s studies
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate along with its Transcript of Records
  • Curriculum Vitae, maximum of 4 pages
  • Personal statement: One required for each Host University. You can apply to a maximum of 2 Host Universities and must submit a unique personal statement for each.
  • Two Recommendation letters: One from your supervisor at your home institution
  • Submit your proposed study plan for the ESIMSAD mobility project. If applying to two host universities, you are required to submit two separate ESIMSAD study plans, one for each host university, using the provided template.
  • Signed ESIMSAD PREVIOUS INTRA-AFRICA AWARD DECLARATION

Additional Documents:

  • Language proficiency certificates (if requested by the Host University)
  • Supporting documents for disadvantaged group status (if applicable)
  • Any other relevant documents that you believe will enhance your application
  • Pre-acceptance Letter issued by the Host University. A mandatory requirement for evaluation for the ESIMSAD Scholarship. Failure to submit this letter as part of your application will automatically disqualify your submission.

Doctorate Degree 

Essential Documents:

  • Valid Passport or National ID
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree certificates along with their Transcripts of Records
  • Curriculum Vitae, maximum of 4 pages
  • Personal statement: One required for each Host University. You can apply to a maximum of 2 Host Universities and must submit a unique personal statement for each.
  • ESIMSAD Research project proposal. If applying to Two Host Universities, you must submit Two ESIMSAD Research project proposals (1 per Host University) using the provided template
  • Previous Intra-Africa/ACP Award Declaration

Additional Documents:

  • Language proficiency certificates (if requested by the Host University)
  • Supporting documents for disadvantaged group status (if applicable)
  • Any other relevant documents that you believe will enhance your application
  • Pre-acceptance Letter issued by the Host University. A mandatory requirement for evaluation for the ESIMSAD Scholarship. Failure to submit this letter as part of your application will automatically disqualify your submission.
  • Recommendation letters: One of which must be from your Master’s supervisor

Doctorate Credit

Mandatory documents:

  • A valid passport or national ID
  • Proof of registration at your home institution’s Ph.D. program
  • Bachelor and master’s degree certificates, along with your transcript of records
  • A maximum 4-page curriculum vitae
  • A previous Intra-Africa/ACP Award declaration
  • Two reference letters, one of which must be from your home institution supervisor
  • Additionally, you will need to submit:
  • Motivation letters for each host university you are applying to (up to a maximum of 2 host universities)
  • An ESIMSAD Research Project Proposal Template (one per host university, if applicable).

Other relevant documents, such as:

  • Transcript of records for your Ph.D. studies (if applicable)
  • Language certificates (if required by the host university)
  • Disadvantaged group supporting documents (if applicable).
  • You may include any other supporting documents that you believe are relevant to your application, which will help to strengthen your submission.

Please note that:

  • A pre-acceptance letter from the host university is required in order to be evaluated for the ESIMSAD Scholarship. If you do not submit this document, your application will not be evaluated.

Academic/Administrative Staff Exchange

Mandatory documents:

  • A valid passport or national ID
  • Proof of registration, which is a certificate issued by your home university stating that you are an academic or administrative staff member
  • A comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV)
  • For academic staff only, a list of main publications, research projects, titles, and awards received
  • For administrative staff only, a description of the position covered, tasks, and responsibilities
  • Motivation letters for each host university you are applying to (up to a maximum of 2 host universities)
  • Reference letters from at least one supervisor from your department or office responsible for approving your leave
  • An ESIMSAD Work Plan Proposal (one per host university, if applicable)
  • A previous Intra-Africa/ACP Award Declaration

Other documents includes:

  • Language certificates if required by the host university
  • Supporting documents if you belong to a disadvantaged group
  • Any other relevant documents that you consider useful to evaluate your profile
  • A pre-acceptance letter from the host university, which is mandatory for all applications. If you do not upload this document, your application will not be evaluated.
