Spotify To Test Offline Mix for Patchy Connections

Spotify to test offline mix for instances of patchy connections. The playlist in question is described by the platform in the app as ‘a mix of recently played songs for when the vibe is high but your connection is low.’

Spotify is at the moment testing a new feature that could make it much easier to keep listening when you are away from an internet connection. Dubbed as “Your Offline Mix” the playlist in question would get to automatically save “a mix of your recently played songs for when the vibe is high, but your connection is low,” as per a screenshot that was shared by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek that shows a roughly three-and-a-half hour-long playlist. Ek however did not share a timeline for when the said feature could get a wider rollout, but given the fact that he is tweeting publicly about the test, it’s hopefully not that too far away.

The audio streaming app already allows users to download playlists or albums for the purpose of offline listening, which is a very useful feature for saving data when you are not on Wi-Fi, or when it is that you are away from an internet connection entirely all the while doing anything from traveling on a plane or even riding the metro. But it, however, can be an annoyingly manual process to pick what music to download, especially in the case that you are someone that likes to hop between lots of different music.

YouTube Offline Mix Feature

YouTube Music has previously had a similar feature known as Offline Mixtape for years, and Spotify now appears to have been working on its offline mix feature ever since at least mid-2020 if evidence discovered at the time by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong (via TechCrunch) is genuine. And why exactly it has taken the service this very long to roll it out is still unclear, but if I had to guess I would assume that it became less of a priority when the Covid pandemic severely dented the amount of time that a lot of people got to spend outside away from Wi-Fi.

Benefits of Spotify’s Offline Mix

Your Offline Mix as you should know seems like it could be a very neat feature when it finally gets to roll out. But in the meantime, if it is that you are finding it hard to pick which playlists to download for offline listening, I would suggest downloading the “Your Top Songs” playlist that was generated for you last year by Spotify. It just might lack your more recent listening obsessions, but at least you will however have a decent starting point to fall back to when your internet fails you.
