Sony’s PS5 Supply Fix Might Be This Simple Disc Drive

The company also stated that they would be eyeing a September 2023 release for the rumored updated PlayStation 5 iteration with an external disc accessory it carries. It seems like Sony plans to eventually phase out the two-model approach when it comes to selling a disk-loaded and all-digital version of the PlayStation 5, at least if the claims turn out to be correct. Shifting to just one formula using a disc drive add-on should help the company bring down the hassles of production.

At the moment, Sony is currently experiencing an acute shortage of PlayStation 5 units right in the face of high demand, even though they have promised us the issues with the restock would soon come to an end. An updated version that carries an optical disc accessory just might accelerate the production in the coming quarter – Plus, it also might solve the disc-sharing dilemma for gamers that bought the all-digital version of the PlayStation 5.

The Looks Would Stay the Same

As stated by a Gaming insider report, this new “D” chassis PlayStation 5 console has been slated to launch in late 2023 and it would look identical to the console that is being sold currently. However, the major difference, according to the leak, it would support a detachable disc drive that you can be hooked to it via a USB-C cable. Sony would reportedly sell the disc drive separately, and also as a bundle with the console.

As of last year, Sony decided to quietly start selling a modified version of the PlayStation last year that comes with a smaller motherboard, tweaked SSD enclosure, and most importantly, more efficient thermal hardware.

Sony has notably designed the upcoming disc accessory in a way that would blend right in with the console’s main body and “it would attach it without looking internal,” as claimed by the report. However, it is not yet clear what changes Sony has in store for this console’s design and if the console would be slimmer compared to the one that is currently available on the market. Also, we don’t know if this rumored external disc drive would be compatible with the all-digital edition of the PlayStation 5 that is at the moment available on shelves.

The Disc-Y Future Returns

One of the biggest advantages that this strategy has brought so far is that if the disc drive malfunctions, it can easily be replaced without causing any damage to other parts that are connected inside. Likewise, a busted console might leave the disc drive intact, and this means a repair or replacement would actually cost less money, or at least buyers would not have to shell out for fresh disc hardware. Sony is surprisingly not the first company to take this route.

In 2006, Microsoft decided to surprise everyone by launching the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive, a boxy disc drive meant for the Xbox 360 console. Interestingly, Microsoft apparently has plans to carry out the same strategy with all their digital Xbox series S. As stated by the patent application that was spotted by GameRant, Microsoft might be toying with the idea of externally verifying a game’s physical copy, making use of a device linked to your console.
