The SET (Start-Up Energy Transition) Award, is an international competition for start-ups around the world who are working on ideas affecting the global energy transition and climate change. For over six years now, the SET award has received over 2,700 applications from over 100 countries.

The Start-Up Energy Transition (SET) is an international innovation platform supporting innovation in the energy transition. The platform was implemented with the conviction that a sustainable future is directly linked to innovative business models and political will.
SET is powered by the renowned German Energy Agency (dena), in partnership with the World Energy Council. It operates with the mission “to strengthen the impact that energy innovators have in reaching climate neutrality’’
The activities of SET include supporting, promoting, and creating opportunities for start-ups in the energy sector to scale-up impact and accelerate the global energy transition in order to reverse climate change.

Eligibility Criteria for SET Award 2023 Competition Qualification
- Founding year: The start-up is not required to have been founded longer than ten years ago, and the date of foundation cannot exceed 2012
- Application language: The application, plus any attached documents, must be in English
- Company registration: All interested and applying start-ups must be registered, or be in the process of becoming registered
- Participating Start-up must be able to present a functioning prototype and a proof of concept or a client, and/or an industrial/corporate/institutional partner
- Completed form: The entire form must be completed as any partially completed applications will not be accepted
Important Dates and Timeline for SET Award 2023
- From 1 November 2022 to 16 January 2023, the seventh round of the SET Award is launched and will run until 16 January 2023. Note that after this date, no application will be accepted.
- Evaluation of Applications from 17 January to 16 February 2023. The best 100 start-ups will be selected for the SET100 list in 2023.
- From 17 February 2023, the release of the SET100 list with the best 100 energy start-ups of 2023, three finalists of each category will be announced.
- 28 March 2023, all the finalists come to Berlin and meet the jury at the jury meeting to present their innovation. Then, on the day after, they pitch their solution at the SET Tech Festival and Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue on 28 March 2023. The winners of each category are announced in the evening at the SET Award Ceremony 2023.
