About the Fellowship
The Overseas Travelling Fellowship is the most distinguished award granted by Flinders University to higher degree research (HDR) students. Each year, a maximum of two fellowships are awarded to full-time or part-time PhD candidates who demonstrate exceptional potential for independent research.
This fellowship allows recipients to engage in short-term study or research at a recognized institution outside Australia, provided the international experience offers clear academic benefits to both the student’s thesis and the University.
Flinders University 2025 Overseas Travelling Fellowship Benefits
The Overseas Travelling Fellowship provides the following support:
- Economy class return airfare with student concession, including taxes
- Travel insurance (arranged through Flinders University)
- Eligibility to receive the BankSA Travelling Award valued at $625
Please note: No more than two fellowships are awarded per year.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Must be enrolled in a PhD program at Flinders University for at least 18 months (or equivalent part-time) by the proposed departure date.
- Demonstrated outstanding aptitude for independent research, with unqualified support from their PhD supervisor.
- Received written approval from the host institution abroad, confirming acceptance for the proposed visit.
- Prepared a detailed research or study plan outlining the purpose and benefit of the overseas experience.
- Must not use the fellowship primarily for conference attendance or data collection.
The Higher Degree by Research Scholarships Committee will assess applications based on academic merit, strength of the proposal, and financial need. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview.
Note: The fellowship supports travel up to a maximum of six months. Extensions are granted only under exceptional circumstances.
