Sometimes we will get to see a new Netflix show announcement and say: “stick it into my veins!”. Griselda, a new drug-lord drama that is coming soon to Netflix, is one of those series/shows that prompted such a type of response.

Griselda as you should know comes from the minds that previously brought you Narcos – which, along with Narcos Mexico, is among one of my very favorite TV shows – and the show in question features Modern Family’s Sofía Vergara as you have never seen her before.

Vergara for those that don’t know plays one of the most vicious drug barons of the 1970s as well as 1980s, and while the trailer in question is just a teaser we are most definitely hooked already.  The heady mix of slick storytelling and extreme violence of Narcos was edge-of-the-seat stuff, and having binged both shows in question there is a Narcos-shaped hole in our viewing schedule that Griselda looks very much perfect to fill.

Why Griselda Is A Must Watch

The six-part series as it will be was created by Eric Newman, the showrunner of Painkiller, and reportedly reunites the Narcos/Narcos Mexico team. It has already been eight years in the making and the pedigree of its cast and crew alone makes it a must-watch for everyone or if it is that you loved the Narcos. That, as well as the prospect of seeing Sofía become Scarface.

What the Character of Sofia (Griselda) is All About

The character of Sofía as you should know is based on a real person, Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco, aka La Jefa (which in case you don’t know is Spanish for ‘the boss’). Blanco as you should also know created one of the most profitable drug cartels in history and was reportedly famed for her savagery as well as her charm. And after moving to America from Colombia back in the 1970s she reportedly ran the notoriously violent cocaine trade in Miami as well as New York, which is a trade that made her the first-ever woman criminal to become a billionaire.

Griselda Was Murdered In the Year 2012

She was murdered in the year 2012, and prior to this has been the subject of the 2006 documentary Cocaine Cowboys as well as a lifetime biopic, Cocaine Godmother of 2018, which reportedly starred Catherine Zeta-Jones. Griselda as you should know premieres on Netflix in the coming year (on January 25, 2024.)
