The service was introduced by Finserve, a fully owned subsidiary of Equity Group Holdings, in association with Airtel, the host mobile network operator. A company statement claimed that the launch will enable communities, businesses, and individuals to fully engage in the digital economy by bringing faster and more reliable access.

Now, almost 370 locations across the country, including Mombasa, Nakuru, Nairobi, Athi River, Kisumu, Kakamega, Siaya, Eldoret, and Bungoma, have seen the rollout of Equitel’s 5G service.

The 5G service will soon be extended to heavily populated areas such as residential neighborhoods, retail centers, and central business districts in collaboration with the partner network.

As per the latest data released by the Communication Authority, Kenya’s 5G network users reached 509,737 for the final three months of 2023, ending in September. This is 59,943 users, or 13.3% more than the 449,794 users the authority had registered in June.

How Technological Advancement is Driving Increase in Demand for High Internet Speeds In Kenya

The country’s technological advancements are driving an increase in demand for high internet speeds, according to the figures. Safaricom had extended its 5G coverage to a few municipalities across 35 counties as of November 2023.

Conversely, Airtel Kenya declared that by the end of 2023, it would have installed an extra 100 5G stations across the nation.

The operator declared in November that it would increase the number of 5G installations from 15 to 32 counties and from 180 to 221 wards. Every Wednesday and Friday, Equitel will provide a 100% bonus on 5G data bundles to draw customers.

Clients need to have a 4G-LTE SIM card and a 5G-capable smartphone to access Equitel 5G services.
