Ghent University Association (GAP) is delighted to announce the Ghent University Short Stay Research Fellowships for African researchers in 2023. As part of the Africa Platform, GAP plays a crucial role in fostering academic collaboration between Ghent University Association and African academic institutions.

These fellowships provide an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral researchers from African higher education or research institutions to conduct research at Ghent University or one of the associated University Colleges.

Ghent University Short Stay Research Fellowships

The Ghent University Short Stay Research Fellowships aim to enhance collaboration between Ghent University Association and African institutions by providing visiting research opportunities to postdoctoral researchers.

These fellowships facilitate knowledge exchange, research advancement, and the establishment of long-term academic partnerships. The Fellowship will consider two clusters of countries. However, In 2023, only candidates who are affiliated to universities in Cluster 1 countries are eligible to apply.

Cluster 1 Countries:

For the 2023 fellowship, applicants from universities in Cluster 1 countries are eligible to apply. The Cluster 1 countries include: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Sudan, Sudan, Togo, Tunisia, Mauretania, Western Sahara

Cluster 2 Countries:

Botswana, Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Angola, South Africa, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Benefits of the Short Stay Research Fellowships

Selected fellows will receive a range of benefits during their stay at Ghent University or one of the associated University Colleges, including:

  • A grant of up to €1000 plus one return flight ticket, for a minimum stay of two weeks. This grant will cover the travel and accommodation costs and living expenses.
  • Office space and access to library facilities for visiting scholars
  • Mentorship and guidance from experienced researchers and faculty members.
  • Networking opportunities with scholars and researchers from diverse disciplines.
  • An enriching academic and cultural experience in a vibrant international environment.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Ghent University Short Stay Research Fellowships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • African Researchers are encouraged to apply
  • For the 2023 fellowship, candidates affiliated with universities in Cluster 1 countries are eligible to apply.
  • Hold a postdoctoral position or be a junior/senior lecturer or professor affiliated with an African higher education or research institution.
