Application Form

The first document you’ll need is the application form itself.  You can’t submit your application without filling out the application form.

You can download the application form from the official website of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

When filling out the form, ensure that you provide all the details required in the form, and follow the instructions provided by the immigration officers, the instructions are also in the form. You should know that any incomplete or incorrect information can lead to delays or denial.

Passport

You must have a valid passport that doesn’t expire before the end of your intended stay in Canada. The passport should also have at least one blank page for the visa stamp.

Tip: Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the end of your stay in Canada to avoid any issues.

Passport-sized photos

You’ll need two recent passport-sized photos that meet Canada’s photo requirements. These are usually 35mm x 45mm (1.37″ x 1.77″) in size.

Photos should be in color, with a plain white or light gray background. Your face should be clear and visible, without any shadows or reflections.

Proof of your legal status

This could be a copy of your visa or any paper that proves you’re allowed to live where you are now. It’s important to show you’re not trying to stay in Canada forever.

You can use a copy of your residence permit, visa, or any other document that proves where you are legally residing.

Job offer letter

If you have a job offer in Canada, you’ll need an official job offer letter from your prospective employer.

This letter should include details such as your job title, salary, working hours, and duration of employment. The job offer you will present should also have a valid date and should be signed by both you and your employer.

Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

If your job in Canada requires an LMIA, your employer has to get this for you. An LMIA is a letter from the Canadian government that shows that there is a genuine need for a foreign worker to fill the position.

Your employer should apply for an LMIA from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), get the approval, and give you the document to submit during your work permit application.

Proof of financial support

You’ll need to demonstrate that you can financially support yourself and any dependents while in Canada. For this, you can present your bank statements or a letter of financial support from a sponsor.

Travel history

You also need to provide a clear and detailed history of your previous international travels.

This is not compulsory but adding it is necessary. You can submit photocopies of your previous visas, entry/exit stamps, and any travel documents.

Proof of Eligibility (e.g., Marriage Certificate, Enrollment at a DLI, Immigration Program Documents)

Depending on your situation, you’ll need to provide documents proving your eligibility for an open work permit. For example, if you’re applying as a spouse, you’ll need to provide a marriage certificate.

Biometrics

Whether you will provide your biometrics or not depends on your status at the time of applying for an open work permit.

The biometrics collection involves providing fingerprints and a photo as part of the application process. It’s a security measure to confirm your identity.

Police Clearance Certificate

This option depends on your country of origin and your status in Canada, the police clearance certificate is also known as a criminal record check.

The document shows that you have no criminal convictions. IRCC updates its document requirements from time to time, so, before starting your application, head to the IRCC website and check for the latest list of documents.

You can also work with a qualified immigration consultant to verify the most up-to-date requirements for your Open Work Permit application if you get confused during your application process.

If you are qualified for an open work permit and fail to submit complete documents, your application will be rejected. The key is to make sure you have all the right documents and that they’re organized neatly. This will give you the best chance of getting your Open Work Permit.
