Through this Grant Program, the Foundation seeks to support projects that intend to facilitate constructive engagement between civil society and government, including civil society participation in policy development and decision-making.

The Commonwealth Foundation’s call for Grant Program 2022 is focusing on three themes namely: Health, Environment, Climate change, and freedom of expression. The Projects are expected to address one or more of these three themes.

About Commonwealth Foundation

The Famous Commonwealth Foundation is an intergovernmental organization established by the Commonwealth Heads of Government in 1966 after it’s sister organization, the Commonwealth Secretariat was established.

Commonwealth Foundation is located at Marlborough House in London. Marlborough House was a former royal palace that was assigned for the use of these Commonwealth institutions by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Head of the Commonwealth.

Commonwealth Foundation is one of the three intergovernmental pillars that operates within that critical space between government and the people.

The Grants Program of the Commonwealth offers a total grant amount of £15,000 and £30,000 per year and for a maximum of two years.

How to Apply for Commonwealth Foundation Grants Program 2022?

Criteria for Commonwealth Foundation Grants Program Qualification

  • Applicants for the Grants Program must be a not-for-profit civil society organization and also registered in an eligible Commonwealth Foundation member country.
  • Ideal Applicants must be Newly registered organizations that is, those already registered and operating for less than a year should not apply.
  • The applicant’s proposed project must be implemented in the country of registration. However, the Projects can be implemented in one or more eligible Commonwealth Foundation member countries and can have a national, sub-national, regional, or international remit.
  • Applicant’s organization must have a minimum of two years’ proof of experience working on participatory governance and advocacy within the area/theme(s) of the proposed project.
  • The Grant amount requested should not exceed 70% of the applicant organization’s total annual income, averaged over the past two years.
  • To be eligible for this Grant, the annual income of the applicant organization, averaged over the past two years, must be less than £2m.
  • All the project proposals must address at least one of the notified priority themes.
  • The project proposal is expected to demonstrate the appropriate integration of gender considerations.
  • The Proposals must be linked to projects that are expected to begin within the second half of 2023

Documents Required for Application

Please note that the applications must include the following  documentation:

  • Submit a logic model (using the template provided).
  • The organization’s registration certificate. This is a scanned copy of an official registration document provided by the relevant authorities in the country where the applicant organization is registered. If the registration certificates are not in English, shortlisted applications can be expected to be asked to provide a certified translation.
  • The required document for grants of £15,000 per annum is a copy of the organization’s most recent audited accounts or annual accounts.
  • The required document for grants of £15,001 and above: a copy of the organization’s most recent audited accounts. Meanwhile, the audited accounts must include both the accounts and the opinion of the external auditor who has certified them. The accounts must be signed off by the auditor and the organization’s Board or its principal executive officer.
