The way that machine learning and artificial intelligence, along with other wearable and other devices, deal with certain skin colors that have led to several problems in past years.

This ranged from the misclassification of black people in Cloud Photo services, fitness wearable and smartwatches that cannot take their heart rate and other measurements from their much darker skin, and a spate that comes from other high-profile mistakes.
While the tech companies have protested their innocence, the point at inadvertent, and side-effects of the systems, work has apparently been underway at Google, at least, right into a much newer way to tackle the diversity of the users.
The problem it suggested is the color scale that they are currently using, the Fitzpatrick skin type or FST. This has been in use since the 1970s and categorizes skin color right into 6 different tones. Four of those skin is meant for “white” skin, with the two remaining being “brown” and “black” skin.

Google recently confirmed that it would be looking at a different approach. Although it’s not ready to provide more details at the moment. “We have been working on an alternative, more inclusive, measures that might turn out to be even more useful in their product development. ” The company said to Reuters, “and would work with scientific and medical experts, that also include groups working with communities of color.” It declined that it gave any specifics.
The FST Scale at the moment was created originally to classify skin types just by how prone to sunburn they are. Those groups were then later used as a part of the Ultraviolet radiation treatments. However, the scale went on to be adopted more broadly. As companies and organizations looked for a different way to segment groups of people.
Google Upcoming Fix for AI Bias Issues
All those groups are not expected to be advanced for machine learning and AI either. Even emojis looked to FST for their skin tone selection, for example.
It remains unclear what work other tech companies might just be doing on more effective, balanced scales. Google has offered no timeline for when it would have its alternative system set and ready to deploy. It’s likely that even when it gets considered to be at a much suitable stage for public-facing use.
Its implementation would be carried out quietly right in on the backend to prevent any launch hiccups from getting spotted. Microsoft and Apple have confirmed with Reuters that they have heard of the shortcomings of FST. Although whether they are actively developing a modern-day counterpart for it remains uncertain.
