Hackers have just attacked the makers of a widespread mobile spyware tool, thus destroying all of the data that was gathered by the company on its victims all the while also exposing malicious actors who were paying for the service of the spyware.

A report by TechCrunch, which was tipped off by DDoSecrets, a nonprofit transparency group that helps to document data leaks, examined a large database which is 1.5GB in size that it got from an unnamed hacking group, thus claiming that the database came from WebDetetive. This is a mobile spyware app that is built for the Portuguese-speaking community. It was also stated that the majority of the affected victims were located in Brazil.

What the Hackers Found

The hackers in question revealed to DDoSecrets that they found multiple vulnerabilities in the infrastructure and endpoints of WebDetetive which reportedly enabled them to get access to the database. And while they were inside, they reportedly uncovered that some 76,000 Android devices were already victims of the spyware, which was in the process of harvesting all sorts of private as well as sensitive information.

What the Group Did With the Stolen Data and Information

However, instead of just stealing the victim’s data and then posting it online, the group in question that is behind the attack deleted their devices from the network of the spyware, thus rendering it useless. The infected devices in question were no longer able to send new data to the server of the spyware. The group stated that it did this “because we could.” You should also know that they generated a different database (which is the one shared with DDoSecrets) and then filled it with information on the people who were making use of the services of WebDetetive.

The Type of Data and Information That Was Stolen

The data as you should know included customer IP addresses as well as their purchase history. The data in question also included all of the devices that were infected by each customer, which version of the spyware that was installed, and also the type of data that was being stolen.

What Are Spywares and Stalkerwares and Where They Can Be Found

Spyware, or stalkerware apps as you should know, are not available on official app stores, such as the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. They can easily and effectively be installed from third-party stores as well as on other places on the internet, and then enable the buyers to install an almost invisible app on the device of the victim and then gather information on calls, text messages, photos, and videos, GPS data, and many more in the process.
