The Cato Institute and IMANI Africa established African Liberty as a project in 2007 to create a platform for advancing peace, individual freedom, and prosperity in the African continent. They achieve this goal by promoting civil discussion and debate about social, legal, economic, and world issues that affect Africans.
African Liberty identifies and trains young promising African freedom advocates in professional critical writing, They also assist them in kick-starting careers in the field of journalism and public policy by engaging them to work with Africa-focused organizations and partner media outlets.

Eligibility Criteria for African Liberty Essay Competition 2023
To be eligible to participate in the 2023 edition of the African Liberty Essay Competition, all Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The Applicant must be an African with the nationality of an African country
- He or She must be currently enrolled in any degree program at any accredited university around the world or;
- The applicant must have already completed a degree program in no more than three years from the day of the application deadline.
