Action For Nature (AFN), a non-profit organization, has established the International Young Eco-Hero Awards as a means of acknowledging and honoring the commendable individual environmental endeavors undertaken by young individuals between the ages of 8 and 16.
AFN actively promotes and supports young people worldwide in undertaking independent environmental action projects. They firmly believe that the youth possess the capacity to make a positive difference in the world and are instrumental in fostering transformative changes in our approach towards the planet.
Prizes
Winners will receive:
- opportunity for participants to receive recognition in the form of a public announcement and media press release.
- Provision of cash prizes of up to $500 for successful entrants.
- For commendable efforts made towards protecting and preserving the environment, a certificate of achievement will be awarded.
- Successful candidates will gain exclusive access to their Eco-Hero alumni Facebook group.
Eligibility Requirements
- Projects that focus on environmental health, advocacy, research, or protection of the natural world are preferred.
- The project should be self-initiated and not assigned by a teacher or adult.
- The project must have a duration of at least 6 months and be close to completion or completed within the past year.
- In the case of an invention project, some trials should be conducted before applying.
- Applicants must be between 8 and 16 years old as of February 28th in the year of application.
- Science Fair and Scouting Badge projects will be considered only if they involve environmental action, educational outreach, or extended studies beyond the fair or badge requirements.
- Projects related to domestic or confined animals, compositions, or reports will not be accepted.
- Applications from previous winners, immediate relatives of AFN board members, active reading panel members, or judges will not be considered.
- They will only consider applications that are submitted in the English language.
Judging Criteria
- Projects that have been ongoing for two or more years are given priority.
- The applications will be evaluated based on various factors, which include but are not limited to:
- Creativity and uniqueness
- Complexity and challenges faced
- Organization and structure
- Time dedication to the project
- Ability to inspire and educate others
- Utilization of external resources such as libraries, experts, media, and community leaders
- Achievement in reaching goals
- Environmental impact
