With that being said, you should know that there are two circumstances that will take place where you will need to report to the child benefit office. These circumstances are if your child’s circumstances change or if your family’s circumstances change. For better understanding I will be treating both scenarios separately and when to report to the child benefit office in both scenarios.
If The Circumstances of Your Child Changes
Generally, child benefits stop on the 31st of August on or after the 16th birthday of your child if they leave training or approved education. You should report to the child benefit office in the event that your child;
- Stays in training or education.
- Leaves education or training later.
You should treat the matter as more urgent and tell the child benefit office immediately in the event that your child;
- Begins paid work for 24 hours or more a week.
- Will start to stay away from you for either 8 weeks in a row or even more than 56 days in a period of 16 weeks.
- Will travel abroad in a permanent move or for more than 12 weeks.
- Goes to or from Northern Ireland.
- Will be in the hospital or residential care for over 12 weeks.
- Changes their name and their gender.
- Goes missing or dies.
- Starts a civil partnership, gets married, or starts to live with a partner.
- Starts getting some certain benefits such as jobseekers allowance, universal credit, income support, tax credit, or employment and support allowance.
- Gets imprisoned for over 8 weeks.
That’s it. You should tell or notify the child benefit office of any other type of changes to your child’s circumstances and you should also include the date of the change.
If The Circumstances of Your Family Changes
In the event that the circumstances surrounding your family change, your benefits may be affected. On your part, you must tell the child benefit office immediately if;
- You change your gender or your relationship ends.
- Your bank account, your name, or your address changes.
- You begin a new relationship or move in with a new partner or remarry.
- If you move to or from Northern Ireland.
- The parents of the child died.
- You plan to travel abroad for over 8 weeks.
- You are a crown servant leaving the United Kingdom for an abroad posting.
- If the status of your immigration changes.
- The payments and contributions for a child that does not live with you change or stop.
- You lose the right to stay in the United Kingdom.
- You get sentenced to prison for over 8 weeks.
