When is Valentine’s Day 2024?
The festival, which celebrated the forthcoming spring, included fertility rites as well as the pairing off of a woman to a man by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius the first changed the name from Lupercalia to St. Valentine’s Day.
Formal messages or valentines were first used in the 1500s. And by the late 1700s commercially printed cards were been used. The primary commercial valentines were printed within the mid-1800s.
Valentines commonly depict Cupid, the Roman god of affection, alongside hearts, traditionally the throne of emotion. Because it had been thought that the avian mating season begins in mid-February. Birds represent the symbol of the day.
Traditional gifts sent on Valentine’s Day include candy and flowers, particularly red roses, which are symbols of beauty and love.
Although there have been several Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day may have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus.
According to old legends, the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter. Whom he had befriended and, by some accounts, healed from blindness.
Other accounts hold that it had been St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop. For whom the vacation was named, though it’s possible the 2 saints were actually one person.
Another common legend states that St. Valentine disregarded the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the men from war. It is for this reason that this festive day is related to love.
As earlier said, and to remind you of this year’s Valentine’s Day 2023. It is set to be celebrated on a TUESDAY, which is the 14th of February.
