The scholarship aids research on the environment by students studying at the University of Canterbury for a Master’s or PhD degree. The Sir Neil Isaac Scholarship in Environmental Science at the University of Canterbury was founded in 2014 by the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust in memory of Sir Neil Isaac (1915-1987). He had a lifelong enthusiasm for enhancing relationships between people and their environment. It replaces the Sir Neil Isaac Scholarship in Geography/Environment Science, which was established in 1987 by the Isaac Wildlife Trust on the Golden Jubilee of the Department of Geography. The scholarship is awarded only to one holder.

Sir Neil Isaac Scholarship Value/Inclusion

There is a grant of about $20,000 per annum awarded to the selected one scholar for a period of 2 to 3 years.  The recipients studying for a Master’s degree may hold the scholarship during both parts of their degree programme. The scholarship will be available for the period necessary for a student to complete 2.00 EFTS in the case of a Master’s student, or 3.00 EFTS in the case of a PhD student.

Sir Neil Isaac Scholarship in Environmental Science at the University of Canterbury is tenable while the recipient is enrolled full-time in a programme for a Master’s or PhD degree at the University of Canterbury. Working in environmental science or environmental conservation under the supervision of a member of the University of Canterbury staff. The applicants must undertake research on the environment which may involve the application of environmental science in the broadest sense to the study of environmental problems or environmental conversation. In recommending the award, the Selection Committee will consider general suitability of the applicant including his/her academic achievement, character, and ability to pursue research.
