How to Choose a MacBook

Unlike some manufacturers, Apple has a relatively narrow selection of laptops to offer. Still, knowing where to start can be tricky.

This means that the key to getting the simplest MacBook deal for you is to understand what you want. It’s not a decent offer if you get the wrong laptop for you, so it’s smart to try and do some research.

The Best Apple MacBook Available

Apple’s MacBooks have different models, so let’s briefly take a glance at what they provide.

MacBook Air (M1, Late 2020)

The MacBook Air M1 is still the best MacBook for the majority of people. What about the M2 model of the MacBook Air? It’s a fantastic laptop that we’ll cover next on this list, but the reality is that for the vast majority of users, the upgrades aren’t necessary, and Apple is keeping it around to keep the starting price under $1,000. Best of all, it is frequently available for $899 or less.

The performance still outperforms every considerably cheaper thin-and-light Windows laptop, and the battery life lasts 14 hours and 41 minutes in our testing. For most intensive tasks, the MacBook Air M1 is more than up to the task and will outlast most competitors.

MacBook Air (M2, 2022)

While most people will be satisfied with the MacBook Air M1, there’s no denying the new design and, of course, chip inside the MacBook Air M2. The display notch isn’t my favorite design choice, but the rest of the changes are fantastic, especially the addition of MagSafe charging, which frees up those two Thunderbolt 4 ports for other uses.

You also get a nice performance boost, and it still delivered 14 hours and 6 minutes in our battery life test, easily outperforming the Windows competition and ridiculously so when performance is taken into account. The fact that it does all of this while remaining whisper quiet and cool in the absence of fans is astounding.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, M2, 2022)

The internal upgrade gives the MacBook Pro M2 a more significant performance boost than many expected, keeping it well ahead of the Windows 11 competition at this price point and beyond.

Moreover, despite packing so much power into such a slim and sleek chassis, the Pro lasted an almost unbelievable 18 hours and 20 minutes on our battery test, which simulates real-world usage. That was enough to propel it to the top of our list of laptops with the longest battery life.

MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2023)

After causing a stir among its fans by failing to release the M2 Pro or M2 Max chips by the end of 2022, Apple Silicon has arrived, and it checks most of the boxes fans were hoping for. Additional CPU and GPU cores? Check. More clout? Check? A stunning display, powerful speakers, a comfortable keyboard, and a sharp and precise webcam? Checks all the way down the board.

The big news is, of course, the M2 Pro and M2 Max; otherwise, the hardware is largely the same excellent laptop we got two years ago. The good news is that they are nearly as good as Apple promised, smacking down any and all challengers with authority.

Gaming is one notable addition to Apple’s boasting about these laptops, which our resident Brit, Jason England, frequently complains about. While it is unlikely to unseat top-tier gaming laptops anytime soon, it appears that we may finally be at a point where casual Mac gamers will no longer have to make do with titles from 5-10 years ago.

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2023)

We called the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Max the “ultimate MacBook,” and while you might think that means it should be at the top of this list, the price makes it a choice you should think about carefully, despite how incredible it is.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro, which starts at $2,499 for the M2 Pro model and $3,099 for the M2 Max model, isn’t for everyone. However, if you are a creative professional or someone who simply wants the biggest and best without regard for cost, this should be at the top of your list.
