The Kofi Annan Foundation and the Democracy and Culture Foundation are accepting nominations for the second edition of the Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Award.

The aim of the Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize is to:

  • Acknowledge outstanding intellectual and practical leadership demonstrated by a young activist in defending, promoting, or revitalizing democracy.
  • Offer the prize recipient support, including a one-year mentorship with a respected democracy expert or senior leader.
  • Inspire young individuals to dedicate themselves to the progress of democracy.

 Background Of The Program

The Athens Democracy Forum (ADF) was established over a decade ago, drawing inspiration from Kofi Annan’s efforts in promoting peace and democracy, as well as his founding of the United Nations Democracy Fund. In 2017, Kofi Annan gave the Aristotle Address and delivered the keynote speech during the opening of the Forum.

With the annual backing of the UN Secretary-General, the ADF has evolved into the primary global event commemorating the International Day of Democracy. Throughout his tenure as Secretary-General of the United Nations, and subsequently at the helm of the Kofi Annan Foundation, Kofi Annan dedicated himself to advancing democracy. He also strongly advocated for youth leadership and inclusion, working to facilitate the engagement of young people in local, national, and international decision-making platforms.
