ICAN Essay Competition 2023 Overview
The essay theme for this year is “Brain Drain and its Impact on the Nation: Discuss How the Emigration of Skilled Students Affects Nigeria’s Development” (500 words).
This year’s essay topic encourages students to explore the crucial issue of skilled individuals leaving Nigeria and the effects it has on the nation’s development. The essay should be 500 words maximum, highlighting a unique perspective on this pressing matter.
Brief History of ICAN
ICAN is the short form for ‘The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria’, it serves as a professional accountancy body in Nigeria. It holds the distinction of being one of the two professional accountancy associations in Nigeria with regulatory authority, the other being the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN).
ICAN’s relationship with ANAN has been marked by tension over the years. In 2007, ICAN even attempted to declare ANAN void, underlining the competition between these organizations. ICAN however, can be traced back to the formation of the Association of Accountants of Nigeria (AAN) in 1960, with the primary goal of training accountants. It is headquartered in Lagos.

For the 2023 ICAN Student Essay Competition, the top three entries will receive the following cash prizes:
- The winner will receive: #15,000
- Second Place receives: #10,000
- Third Place: #7,500
Eligibility Requirement for ICAN Essay Competition
To qualify for the ICAN Student Essay Competition, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Candidates must be students of any accredited institution in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
- Applicants are expected to submit their essay entry by the due date.
Submission Guidelines for ICAN Essay Competition 2023
To ensure that your essay entry is considered for review, you must adhere to the following guidelines:
- Use font size 12 (Times New Roman font)
- Ensure to include the writer’s name and contact information, preferably an email.
- Provide a critical examination of the impact of brain drain in Nigeria and propose possible solutions, all in your own words.
- Strictly prohibit the use of AI or any form of plagiarism.
- Cite sources when referencing an author.

- Applicants who wish to make any inquiries should contact the admin via the same email address.
- Applicants are advised to submit their essay before the deadline, as no entries will be considered after the submission deadline
- A review of all submitted essays will commence just after the deadline. Subsequently, winners will be announced on December 7, 2023.
