Ashoka Young African Climate Changemakers Challenge 2024

The ‘Young African Climate Changemakers Challenge’ organized by Ashoka, in partnership with the Anglo-American Foundation, invites young individuals aged 16-25 from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Botswana to utilize their creativity and initiative in addressing climate change.

This initiative aims to collectively create a sustainable future and leave a lasting impact on our planet’s well-being. Come and be a part of shaping a more sustainable world with your ideas and existing initiatives.

They are looking for:

  • Spearheading ideas and innovations that address climate change: The emphasis is on seeking ideas and innovations designed to both mitigate and adapt to climate change, empowering young individuals and supporting the goal of a sustainable world.
  • Building on existing climate change solutions and indigenous climate knowledge systems: The focus is on soliciting ideas and innovations that enhance and bolster established climate solutions, as well as integrate indigenous climate knowledge to increase their efficacy, visibility, and impact. This approach aims to advance toward a sustainable future that incorporates more culturally sensitive methods of addressing climate change.
  • Increasing access to climate literacy at all socio-economic levels: They are interested in proposals and innovations that promote wider comprehension and involvement in discussions about climate change. By ensuring all communities have access to vital climate information and involving individuals from diverse backgrounds in the conversation, this may lead to more inclusive participation towards sustainable solutions and foster empowerment within communities.

Awards

All eligible candidates will receive:

  • Feedback on their submissions from the Ashoka & Anglo American Foundation networks.
  • The option for peer feedback through the Challenge online platform, allowing them to engage with other YACC Challenge applicants.
  • Access to informational sessions and educational resources.
  • Networking prospects to connect with peers who share similar interests and experts in the field.
  • Access to online materials on changemaking and social entrepreneurship.

Early Entry standout

  • Applicants who submit by the Early Entry Deadline will get feedback to enhance their applications before the final deadline of July 30, 2024.
  • Three selected winners who submit their applications by May 30, 2024, will receive a $100 prize each.

Semi-finalists

  • Opportunity to improve their applications based on reviewer feedback.
  • Participation in roundtable discussions with like-minded peers.
  • Recognition on Ashoka’s communication channels and social media platforms.

Finalists

  • Participation in roundtable discussions with peers.
  • Feature on Ashoka’s communication outlets and social media platforms.

Winners:

  • Each of the ten winners will receive a $1000 award.
  • Invitation and hospitality at a celebratory event in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • Access to storytelling opportunities and networking events.
  • Potential mentoring from experienced social entrepreneurs.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to qualify for participation, individuals need to fulfill the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be between 16 and 25 years old at the time of application, and should not be older than 25 by the end of the entry period on 30 July 2024 at 11:59 p.m. SAST.
  • Applicants must be residents of one of the four Southern African countries, namely South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, or Namibia.
  • Entries will only be accepted in English, as all challenge communication and content will be delivered in English.
  • Each person or team is allowed only one entry.
  • The primary country of impact for the initiative being presented in the application must be one or more of the following four countries: Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia, or Botswana.
  • Applicants must be either the founder or co-founder of the initiative their application represents.
  • Applications must fall into one of the two categories:
  • Idea-stage initiative: Participants should have identified a problem and developed a plan of action to solve it.
  • Existing initiative: Participant’s initiative is being implemented at any stage of development, with proof of concept through piloting, established activities, or scaling.
  • Winners under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult chaperone to the in-person event, and their participation must be approved by their parent or legal guardian.
