African Liberty Writing Fellowship Program 2024/2025 for young Africans (Monthly Stipend Available)

Applications for the 2024/25 African Liberty Writing Fellowship Program, are now open. The Fellowship is a one-year programme that trains young Africans in opinion article writing for those interested in careers in academia, the media, public policy, or any other field involving critical and analytical writing.

African Liberty Writing Fellowship Program

African Liberty, established in 2007,  serves as a forum for the respectful discussion and debate of social, legal, economic, and global issues that impact Africans in order to advance individual freedom, peace, and prosperity throughout the continent. It was established as a project of the Cato Institute and IMANI Africa, thereafter the Atlas Network.

Working with Africa-focused think tanks and partner media outlets, the African Liberty discovers and teaches young, promising African freedom advocates in professional critical writing, assisting them in launching careers in journalism and public policy.

African Liberty Writing Fellowship – Details

Accepted applicants for the African Liberty Writing Fellowship will participate in a five-week mandatory online training. The top Candidates who emerge from the training will then be admitted as African Liberty writing fellows.

The five-week training is scheduled to run from  May 21, 2024, to June 18, 2024, while the writing fellowship commences on July 8, 2024 to July 8, 2025.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the African Liberty Writing Fellowship:

  • Applicants are expected to have enrolled in, or must have graduated from, an African institution of higher learning. Or,
  • Applicants must be Africans who are currently pursuing higher education outside the continent.

Is the African Liberty Writing Fellowship Program paid?

This fellowship is compensated. Payment is subject to a regular evaluation. Please be aware that until a fellow is inducted, financial pay is not taken into consideration.

In what way is the programme competitive?

In 2022–2023, African Liberty received about 1600 applications; 50 were accepted to participate in the five-week course. They established 25 writing fellows.

Do you take applications for fellowships for older citizens?

No.

What prerequisites must I meet?
