About the Research Project

Microplastics (particles smaller than 5mm) are increasingly recognized as environmental threats. In this project, they are studied as “Trojan horses”—carrying antibiotics and pollutants through aquatic ecosystems.

These particles can adsorb antibiotics, transport them through food chains, and potentially contribute to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). However, the role of microbial processing, especially by protists, remains poorly understood.

This PhD aims to explore how biological interactions change the way antibiotics bind to microplastics, ultimately affecting pollution spread and environmental health.

Research Objectives

This interdisciplinary project follows a three-part research approach:

1. Molecular Modelling & AI Analysis

  • Study how antibiotics bind to plastic surfaces
  • Identify structural factors influencing adsorption
  • Use AI tools to analyze molecular interactions

2. Laboratory Experiments

  • Measure adsorption and desorption under real environmental conditions
  • Test how antibiotics behave in aquatic sediment systems

3. Microbial Processing Study

  • Investigate how protists ingest and transform microplastics
  • Compare antibiotic binding before and after biological processing
  • Assess impact on pollutant transfer and AMR risk

AI Collaboration with DeepMirror

The project includes collaboration with DeepMirror, an AI-driven drug discovery company. You will:

  • Use AI-powered molecular representation tools
  • Generate insights into antibiotic–polymer interactions
  • Combine computational predictions with lab validation
  • Accelerate discovery using machine learning techniques

This studentship is part of the UKRI TechExpert pilot programme (2026 cohort) under the UK government’s TechFirst initiative.

Eligibility Criteria (2026 Entry)

Dr Julia Reiss is an environmental scientist specializing in:
