These rules affect all schools above and any study permit / dependent / PGWP application you make:
- As of September 1, 2025, the proof of funds requirement increased: one applicant must show CAD 22,895 per year to cover living expenses, etc.
- On January 21, 2025, IRCC changed open work permit (OWP) eligibility for spouses/common-law partners of international students. Only spouses of students in master’s programs ≥ 16 months, doctoral programs, or select professional/eligible programs qualify.
- Dependent children are no longer eligible for open work permits under the family member rules.
- PGWP eligibility changed: some college/diploma programs require that the student’s program be in an eligible field of study. Also, distance learning, part-time final semesters, etc., may affect eligibility. But there was a grace period: programs removed from eligibility in June 2025 were postponed until early 2026.
